چکیده

In analogical problem solving, non-isomorphic source/target relations are typically only investigated in contrast to the ideal case of isomorphism. We propose to give a closer look to different types of non-isomorphic source/target relations and varying degrees of structural overlap. We introduce a measure of graph distance which captures the “size” of partial isomorphism between two structures and we present an experiment investigating the influence of different non-isomorphic relations on transfer success. The experiment was inspired by some open design questions for the analogy module of IPAL (a computational model integrating problem solving and learning).

A Closer Look at Structural Similarity inAnalogical

We propose to characterize structural similarity between source and target problems by the type and size of their structural overlap. Size of structural overlap is captured by a measure of graph-distance. We investigated the innuence of structural overlap on transfer success in analogical problem solving in two experiments. In both experiments, for a xed source problem one of ve target problems...

A Closer Look at Structural Similarity in Analogical Transfer1

We propose to characterize structural similarity between source and target problems by the type and size of their structural overlap. Size of structural overlap is captured by a measure of graph-distance. We investigated the influence of structural overlap on transfer success in analogical problem solving in two experiments. In both experiments, for a fixed source problem one of five target pro...

Investigation of the Effects of Non-Linear and Non-Homogeneous Non-Fourier Heat Conduction Equations on Temperature Distribution in a Semi-Infinite Body

In this paper, the non-Fourier heat conduction in a semi-infinite body was examined. The heat wave non-Fourier heat conduction model was used for thermal analysis. Thermal conductivity was assumed temperature-dependent which resulted in a non-linear equation. The heat source was also considered temperature-dependent which resulted in a non-homogeneous equation. The Mac-Cormack predictor-correct...

Reducing structural-element salience on a source problem produces later success in analogical transfer: what role does source difficulty play?

Two experiments in reasoning by analogy were conducted to study the role of inducing source difficulty by reducing the salience of the source's structural elements. Three nonexclusive hypotheses were tested. According to the first, a difficult source problem improves analogical transfer because it increases the probability that the subject will notice the similarity between the source and the t...
